Update 1/8/09: thanks to the comment from Trevor Wilson, from Gradversity.com, we installed the patch/fix so that this is not important anymore. And it seems to have resolved at least one other thing that Marc reported well keep an eye on that! Microsoft 8 came out a while back and they introduced a new feature bug if you use IE 8 youll see something wrong on JibberJobber.  Fortunately its easy to fix. When you login the Action Item panel is messed up it looks weird check this out: To fix this once, simply go to the browser menu (not the JibberJobber menu), click on Tools, and then click on Compatibility View (red arrow). To fix it FOREVER, click on Compatibility View Settings (green arrow) and make sure JibberJobber is in the list of websites. 22 Ways to be an Annoying Co-Worker We all have that one really annoying co-worker that drives us nuts. Ive been hearing a lot of funny stories from my friends about this topic lately and wanted to share some notable grievances. If you want to be the annoying one in the office you will probably: 1. Tell a story every time you get into the office and re-cap the details of EVERY phone call to the people sitting around you. 2. Assume that your co-workers and subordinates can read your mind. In other words, just dont b0ther communicating at all. Just stay silent then get frustrated when your co-worker didnt do what you wanted. 3. Talk about your husband non-stop. We do not care what your husband did at the gym, what he ate for dinner, and what he said to the cat last night. Sorry. 4. Come in late and leave early every day. 5. Take personal calls all day long and whisper. 6. Give other girls in your office the elevator because you are obviously being super critical about their hair, outfit and accessories. Since when are you the fashion police? 7. Dont let your co-workers do their job. Email and call them after every single thing they do. Dont bother just doing it yourself or anything 8. Be the leader who doesnt lead: dont check in, dont hold meetings, dont have any interest in your subordinates personal or career development, and dont provide any benchmarks for your team to follow. 9. Wear nasty perfume that is so strong that the whole floor wants to pass out or vomit. 10. Ask the same question 6 times in one day about the status of a project. Guess what? Asking the same question repeatedly doesnt make it get done any faster. 11. Listen to loud Jamaican music at your desk in an open room. 12. Be as cold as ice: dont make eye contact, dont ever compliment anyone, and definitely dont show compassion to your co-workers. 13. Pretend you are the manager when you are actually the assistant. 14. Talk really, REALLY loud all day. 15. Eat smelly food at your desk and chew loudly. 16. Tell everyone how smashed you got last night dude! 17. Constantly call in sick or make up dumb excuses to leave early due to your personal life. 18. Dont tell your co-workers when they made a mistake or couldve done something better. Save it for their review 6 months later. 19. Spy on everyone around you in silence.   Then judge them and talk about it in the break room. 20. Make people feel stupid by being passive aggressive. 21. Act like you are way better than everyone. 22. Complain constantly.

Make Sure Inclusivity is at the Heart of Your Recruitment There’s no one size fits all as the skills required for one specific industry won’t be the same for another, which is why every organization needs to tailor their recruitment strategy. Despite the differences in requirements and process, all organizations need to place inclusivity at the heart of their recruitment to ensure the selection process is equitable for all. Not only does these benefit candidates, but it means businesses can make the most of all the talent available. There are simple strategies that you can implement which will improve the inclusivity of your recruitment, whilst streamlining current processes. Take stock Before embarking on revolutionizing your recruitment strategy, it’s important to take a step back and consider the processes you are currently using. Don’t just consider how you conduct your selection process but make sure you’re also taking a good look at elements such as how you attract candidates, as well as how you manage the post-interview and onboarding process. By taking stock of where you are now, you will be able to pinpoint exactly where your recruitment processes are lacking or may be outdated. It is important to remember that when applying, candidates will do their research on your organization too. Whether they take the leap and apply for your job could hinge on the impression they get of your company.   This could be from your website, marketing material, or their own customer experience.   It’s therefore imperative to showcase yourselves and the inclusivity of your organization as much as possible! Information like your gender pay statistics, if your organization qualifies, is readily available on the government portal and is likely to be something which prospective employees look at as part of their research.   Its therefore important to publish an accompanying narrative to explain the gap and set out what action you are taking to address any imbalance.   By taking this proactive approach it will give prospective candidates faith that you are trying to eliminate any gender pay gaps. Attracting candidates How you advertise the job has a big impact on the candidates that subsequently apply. Review job descriptions to make sure that they are not precluding groups of candidates from applying for that role, or for any role within your organization. Similarly, many organizations choose to outsource the process to a recruitment agency so make sure that their recruitment practices are adhering to and enhancing your inclusivity policies to allow you to make the most of a diverse talent pool. Some things that need to be continually revised when advertising a job role include: The job description â€" Instead of always using the same job description year on year, make sure you revise it each time you advertise to ensure it is up to date and accurately reflects what is required especially as the skills needed in the workplace are always changing. The vocabulary used â€" There are certain words and phrases that have connotations that would deter groups from applying. For example, use of the word ‘driven’ appears to just be synonymous with ‘motivated’, however, it could imply that the candidate needs to be of a certain age and ability and could also have masculine undertones. The images included The images you choose to use should clearly demonstrate the diversity of your team, as this may encourage those in underrepresented groups to apply as it is clear you value everyone’s voice. Selection Assessment centers and selection days are a prominent way for organizations to gain a ‘true’ representation of the skills and personalities of the applicants and are a common feature of graduate schemes. Whilst they appear to be an engaging alternative to the traditional one-on-one interview, they may actually be a deterrent if they require levels of physical activity that would not be necessary for the role on a day-to-day basis. Assessment may not show if the candidate is suitable for the job in question. If the task you are asking candidates to undertake is not something they would be required to regularly perform as part of the role, it may be more beneficial to find a different way to assess the candidate’s suitability.   This could include things such as holding open days or ‘taster days’ as part of the initial attraction process, offering a ‘work trail’ rather than a formal interview.   It may also be necessary to adapt tests or selection exercises i.e. granting some additional time for completion, or simply questioning whether time tests are needed at all. Interview It is very common for line managers to be the ones conducting interviews, and it is even more common for these managers to be relying on the recruitment experience they have gained throughout their career alongside the limited training they have received, as opposed to a comprehensive interview training specific program. Without comprehensive training, it’s possible they are more susceptible to unconscious biases or may have picked up bad habits along the way. Instead, anyone who has a prominent role in the recruitment process should be skilled up ineffective, inclusive recruitment practices and should fully understand the important role they play, and the impact unconscious biases can have. Those who conduct interviews may be the first person a prospective candidate meets face to face so they should embody the brand and values you wish to be known for. Interview panels should be comprised of a variety of voices and groups so that a balanced decision can be made this could be a mi x of genders, ages, ethnicities, and others who may not be at a senior level. Whilst an informal interview can put the candidate at ease and encourage a conversation to flow, it can also mean negative biases or practices can manifest. Whilst it is important to make a candidate feel relaxed, the interview should also remain structured and focused on the competency of the candidate, so the process is fair to all. Everyone should be asked the same questions and their answers are judged against the same grading scheme so they can be directly compared. This way, the most suitable candidate for a specific role in question can be found. Its imperative at every stage of the employee journey that you consider what adjustments you can make to ensure that all employees, whatever their background, age, or gender or whether they have an apparent disability or not, see, feel and experience your organization as being committed to a culture which provides the supported needed at every stage to enable its people to do their job to the best of their ability.   Focusing on the inclusivity of your recruitment strategy is integral to creating a positive brand identity for your business and will ensure that no candidate is deterred from applying to your organization, meaning you have access to the whole talent pool. For example, someone might say that capital punishment is generally wrong, but they might simultaneously think it’s okay to execute Osama bin Laden. In many cases, people define themselves as absolutists, but their actions and opinions show that they also see life’s gray areas. Ethics experts bring these gray areas out into the open and help society navigate through them. Ethics Keep Us Honest Many people think that taking one’s own life for any reason is wrong. Others see the suffering of people with terminal illnesses, or they see people who are facing Alzheimer’s or dementia, and they see justification for why these people would rather die on their own terms. The dilemma becomes like a multiple-choice question on a standardized test (“Suicide is wrong when…”) that some people will answer “always” while others will answer “when you’re young and healthy.” In dilemmas like these, ethicists help us negotiate guidelines that fall in between extremes. For instance, we’re not a society that completely denies people the right to a compassionate death, and we also don’t force the elderly to commit suicide because their health care is too costly. Ethicists help us solve big dilemmas like these, but they also keep people honest about day-to-day decisions. Motivation Monday Anything Is Possible, If... Ordinary people can achieve what others may consider extraordinary results. It happens every day. It can happen for you, if What Is It That Sets the Ordinary Apart? There is absolutely nothing wrong with being ordinary. Phew. But how does someone without an advanced degree, awards, or formal recognition achieve amazing results? Thats the secret many want to know the answer to. I believe it is primarily due to their spunk. During a specific moment in time, that ordinary person has a passion, unwavering commitment, burning desire, passion, or motivation to make something happen. Nothing will stop them. They believe so strongly in what they feel, know, or want to do, that they go the extra mile and take risks to turn it into a reality. Failure is not an option. They dont fear it, or even consider it. Armed and Ready The ordinary person knows the obstacles they face and makes plans to overcome them. They understand or come to understand the situation better than most and build a strategy to work around stumbling blocks. OK, this strategy may not be completely spelled out. The ordinary person may be using their gut instincts to move forward. Or they may have conducted research and spoken to many people to gather information. But what makes this ordinary person extraordinary is their specific vision and unwavering path toward the end goal. They know exactly what they want to accomplish. Socially Savvy The ordinary person will build relationships with people who can help them achieve their goal or vision. They are clear about what they want from the relationship and communicate it enthusiastically. Their energy is convincing. Those who hear it and believe in the goal are lured by the contagiousness of the mission. They know the buttons to push and try everything they can think of before backing off. The ordinary person has carefully selected the allies they need. E for Effort The ordinary person tries harder. They work tirelessly to make it happen. Every minute and every step is allotted and slotted. They squeeze more into to a day and a week than most could. And they never complain, whine or lament their time commitments. The ordinary persons optimism for the outcome drives them. Thick Skin The ordinary person doesnt pay attention to the nay-sayers. And criticism doesnt bother them. For every person that says no, the ordinary person knows there will be many more who will say yes! and so they forge ahead, reaching for the next affirmative response. The ordinary person develops resilience to the opinions of others. You Are Ordinary AND Extraordinary Pull all these pieces together and you can be both ordinary and extraordinary. Just one time is all it takes. Be focused, passionate, and unwavering.
